A higher percentage of the reels will have the current design.

Plates and housing on the newer reels are a darker gold color, as shown in the photo below, but color isn't as important as the engraving on the housing.
The "International 965" is engraved as two lines on the early reels, regardless of reel color, then changed to the text being on one line on the current ones.

TO SEE WHICH TYPE OF GEARS THAT YOU HAVE:
The idler gear is the most distinctive - the 64-965 was a plastic gear with an attached small brass gear, O.D. measures 1.078 inches overall. The current 64M-965 is entirely made of plastic, and O.D. measures 1.1 inches.

If you have the original plastic/brass idler gear, and need to replace ANY of the three pieces, you will need to order all three parts.
